We will begin our exploration into what symptoms are and why they occur with a brief examination of how consciousness views the universe and the mechanism use to perceive it. This mechanism is called perception. Perception is literally a way of looking at the world. The very nature of perception is to filter out ‘unnecessary’ information. It literally ‘breaks’ reality into quantifiable parts with the bulk of what is available to be perceived filtered out only allowing what it believes to be already ‘out there’ to rise to the surface of the mind.

When we come to understand the fundamental role of consciousness the origin of illness and their subsequent symptoms become self- evident. “Only the mind is capable of error. The body can act wrongly only when it is responding to misthought. The body cannot create, and the belief that it can, a fundamental error, produces all physical symptoms” (ACIM pg. 19 original version; pg. 23 second edition). One of the byproducts of perception is the seeming division of the universe into polar opposites. As a result we see ourselves as living in a dualistic universe. This polarity is the main cause of symptoms in that our symptoms represent that which we have denied and/or judged against in our psyche.

This creates a polarity in the mind because what is judged against does not go away. Instead, it is relegated to what Carl G. Jung called the shadow. A Course In Miracles states “Judgment always involves rejection. It never emphasizes only the positive aspects of what is being judged, whether in you or in others. What has been perceived and rejected, or judged and found wanting, remains in your mind because it has been perceived” (ACIM pg 42 original version; pg 46-47 second edition).

Illness is our shadow made manifest.

Symptoms play a key role in helping us to see the things we rejected and thus have not integrated as the body does not lie. Symptoms manifest in the in body as a last resort to communicate what we are not processing at the higher levels of awareness.

The body is the densest form of consciousness with every part of the body being a manifestation of consciousness. As a result, every part, aspect and function has a higher meaning and is an effective tool of communication when we do not respond to the subtler forms.

Symptoms are literally blocked energy in the body. Where the symptoms occur and the degree and frequency at which they appear gives us insight into the area we are not accessing and/or processing through. They show us what we are not ‘hearing’.

This energy, if not integrated, will grow in the shadow until it has no choice but to manifest in the physical body. This occurs to bring balance. When we nurture one pole the other grows in secret. This does not mean that we should engage in harmful or hurtful activities. What is does mean is that we are to acknowledge all aspect of ourselves and bring them into balance, harmony, peace and love. This is not done through denial but integration.

When seen from this perspective we can then see how fundamental illness is to the human condition until we learn to integrate the perception of polar opposites existing in a dualistic universe and subsequently a dualistic consciousness.

The disunity or disease that is a current condition of our experience as human will give way to the realization and ensuing experience of Unity Consciousness when we openly and actively seek to restore balance in our psyche by facing and integrating those things that we have hither to fore hidden from ourselves. When we integrate we will no longer have illness or their requisite symptoms.

What we have hidden or judged against cannot be healed because it is not acknowledged. Once hidden, with nowhere else to go, it will manifest in our bodies as illness/symptoms. By understanding symptoms and illness as revealing to us those things we have hidden/rejected, we come to recognized them as presenting us with a unique opportunity to heal at the level of cause/mind.

The psychological, literal and oftentimes obvious interpretations of dreams are helpful, useful and advantageous in aiding in our understanding of life events and are valid within the level they explore. While interpretations at the grosser levels have merit the underlying spiritual meaning is the key to understanding communication from Soul.

It is also crucial that the distinction between analyzing dreams and interpreting dreams is understood. Dream interpretation is attempting to tell you what the dream means. Dream Analysis reveals to you what the symbols mean in the context in which they appear in a specific dream.

For example, water in the overall sense symbolizes the unconscious, emotion, intuition etc. However, the context in which the water is present in the dream is paramount e.g. is it a lake, ocean, stream, pool or faucet etc.? Is it moving or stagnant? Are you in it, on it, under it or above it? Are you in a vessel? If so, what kind? Are you floating, swimming, not moving or standing on shore? How did you come to be there? Did you, walk, run, skip, drive or just ‘found’ yourself there? These are just some of the many factors that go into dream analysis.

Dreams are like finger prints in that although everyone has them they are unique unto themselves. In much the same way dreams and dream symbolism are unique to each individual and are one of the means by which our Soul/Higher Self conveys information, instructions and guidance.
